Azar’s Not-So-Secret Fifth Priority: Restricting Women’s Access to Health Care

02.01.19 – With Health and Human Secretary (HHS) Secretary Alex Azar scheduled to address the Bipartisan Policy Center this morning to presumably tout his “four priorities” for the department, we won’t likely hear him discuss is his fifth priority: restricting women’s access to health care.

From working to roll back access to birth control to proudly declaring himself “pro-life” to keeping anti-abortion zealots in positions of power, Azar has made clear that his ultimate goal is to limit women’s ability to obtain birth control and abortions.

“Even before he publicly touted his anti-abortion bona fides last month, it has been clear that Alex Azar is cut from the same cloth as the rest of his department, which is stacked with anti-abortion hardliners,” said Mary Alice Carter, Executive Director of Equity Forward. “It’s hard to stomach his self-congratulatory rhetoric about HHS’ accomplishments when Azar and his lieutenants have been working overtime to rob large segments of our country of their health care options.”

About Equity Forward

Equity Forward is a watchdog project that seeks to ensure transparency and accountability among anti-reproductive health groups and individuals. In addition to running HHSWatch.org, an extensive website with a library of research on nearly 50 political appointees at our nation's health department who are hostile to reproductive health care, Equity Forward also runs PutPeopleBeforePolitics.org, which calls on Secretary Azar not to cut nearly $100 million in lifesaving research at the behest of the anti-abortion lobby.
