Equity Forward Launches Pro-Lies.org to Highlight Anti-Abortion Lobby’s Toxic Influence on Women’s Health Care

Website provides comprehensive research on the extremist anti-abortion organizations aiming to criminalize abortion and hinder access to birth control

05.20.19 – As state governments across the country dramatically reduce women’s ability to access health care, Equity Forward today launched Pro-Lies.org. The website is an extensive library of research on seven anti-abortion organizations that distort the truth and peddle misinformation and outright lies in their coordinated efforts to deny health care.

The site provides a detailed look at how the anti-reproductive health care movement is colluding with the Trump administration and state governments to advance its dangerous agenda at all levels of government. The American public did not elect the anti-abortion lobby — and in fact, most voters don’t agree with these extremist groups — yet the Trump administration and state elected officials follow its guidance on restricting health care for millions of people.

“The anti-abortion lobby tries to hide behind the guise that it is driven by a dedication to ‘life’ — but the groups behind this coordinated assault threaten the lives and well-being of countless women and families across the country,” said Mary Alice Carter, senior advisor for Equity Forward. “These groups have far too much unchecked political power and it’s time to take a hard look at their efforts to restrict women’s access to health care. The anti-abortion lobby’s influence is harming the public, and we must hold it accountable.”

Visitors to the site can find detailed descriptions of seven top groups spreading misinformation about abortion care and LGBTQ people. Users are also able to see connections between organizations on the bottom of each profile page. The profiles delineate three key sections, including:

  • Extremism: The most egregious and hateful myths about abortion that fly in the face of medical evidence, equations of birth control with abortion, homophobic fearmongering through mistruths about the LGBTQ community, and insulting and demeaning lies about women who have abortions.

  • Key Players: The top officials leading the charge at each organization, many of whom — like Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of Susan B. Anthony List — have relationships with President Trump, Vice President Pence and/or other groups featured on the site.

  • Influence:

    • Influence on the Trump administration: Groups such as the Susan B. Anthony List have cozy relationships with the Trump administration, and the Trump administration has rewarded them by implementing their agenda, nearly verbatim, to roll back access to basic health care services.

    • Influence in the states: Additionally, the anti-abortion lobby’s hateful and misleading rhetoric plays a direct role in the unprecedented number of bans on abortion that state legislatures are pushing across the country in 2019.

Equity Forward will continue to update the site with new information about the seven groups, and profiles of additional extremist groups are forthcoming. As long as the anti-abortion lobby’s influence remains unchecked, Pro-Lies.org will serve as the public’s source of information on the extremism, political power, and toxic, out of touch lies it peddles.
