Equity Forward Responds: President Trump Meets with Radical Anti-Abortion Group In the Oval Office

02.14.19 – Earlier today, President Trump reportedly met with members of the anti-abortion lobby, including Marjorie Dannenfelser, the President of Susan B. Anthony (SBA) List, an extremist organization that holds views and advances policies that are far outside of the mainstream. Equity Forward issued the following statement in response:

"Donald Trump is currently meeting with the head of a radical and extreme group that thinks birth control is the same as abortion and that pregnancy from rape is a 'gift from god,'" said Mary Alice Carter, Executive Director of Equity Forward.

“SBA List will claim this meeting is about abortion later in pregnancy, but that is a fabrication it is using to distract from its true agenda.Together, this dangerous duo wants to overturn Roe v. Wade, choke off women’s access to reproductive health care and punish women and health care providers.

“The President told us during his campaign that he thinks women should face punishment for abortion. When someone shows you who they are the first time, believe them."

SBA List — and Dannenfelser in particular — holds many extreme and out-of-touch views on a variety of issues, including:

Banning abortion in nearly all circumstances:

  • In 2016, SBA List President Marjorie Dannenfelser said that her “perfect abortion bill” would ban abortion in all circumstances except to save the life of the woman.

Opposing many of the most common methods of birth control:

  • SBA List is opposed to many kinds of birth control because — according to Dannenfelser — “there’s a chance they could prevent a fertilized egg from implanting.”

Supporting homophobic and discriminatory policies against LGBTQ individuals

  • SBA List joined the anti-LGBTQ “Life And Marriage Coalition” that formed in August 2012 and partnered with another anti-LGBTQ organization, the National Organization For Marriage, to run ads against Barbara Boxer because she supported “abortion and homosexual marriage."

Supporting extreme candidates

  • Supporting extreme candidates — including Todd Akin — who hold misogynistic and incorrect views on pregnancy and sexual assault, including the notion that “legitimate rape” rarely results in pregnancy and that pregnancy from rape is a 'gift from god.'
