Following Alabama Abortion Ban Vote, Group Files Public Records Request

Bill seeks to ban abortion, even in case of rape and incest; designed to overturn Roe v. Wade

05.14.19 – Just now, the Alabama Senate voted to advance a restrictive anti-abortion law that would ban abortion, even in cases of rape and incest. The legislation represents an important development in the anti-abortion movement’s decades-long campaign to try to overturn Roe v. Wade and eliminate women’s access to health care.

Alabama Lt. Governor Will Ainsworth posted a video in support of the bill’s rape and incest provisions, stating, “Abortion is murder. Those three simple words sum up my position on an issue that many falsely claim is a complex one.”

In response, Equity Forward filed a public records request requesting communications from all of the bill’s sponsors in the legislature about the dangerous bill. Under Alabama law, citizens have a right to a copy of any public writing of the state.

“Groups like Susan B. Anthony List, Americans United for Life and Right to Life have been laying the groundwork to limit women’s reproductive health care options and ban abortion,” said Mary Alice Carter, senior advisor for Equity Forward. “While this unconstitutional law will rightfully be challenged in the courts, we need to get to the bottom of exactly who is orchestrating this extreme effort in Alabama and in statehouses across the country.

Carter continued, “We stand with the activists on the ground who are fighting these efforts and ensuring patients are getting the care they need.”
