Former Refugee Director Scott Lloyd to Be Held Accountable for Lying to Judiciary Committee

Equity Forward research shows Lloyd received weekly “pregnancy notifications”

03.22.19 – Today, House Judiciary Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) sent a letter to Scott Lloyd, former Director of the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR), requesting that he clarify the false statements made during the committee's child separation hearing last month. Lloyd unequivocally denied tracking the menstrual cycles of young women in ORR custody when Rep. Madeleine Dean (PA-04) directly questioned him about it.

Mary Alice Carter, Executive Director of Equity Forward, issued the following statement:

“Every time an official from HHS testifies we find ourselves with more questions than answers. Lloyd is no exception. Chairman Nadler is right to ask Lloyd to answer for lying about tracking young women's pregnancies and menstrual cycles and for obsessively meddling in their civil rights. This is just one more on a long list of reasons why Secretary Alex Azar should have already fired Scott Lloyd; he is simply unfit to work at HHS. This is a serious issue and we applaud Chairman Nadler for bringing Lloyd back to hold him accountable.”

New reporting found that Lloyd maintained a spreadsheet of the young pregnant women in custody. Emails obtained by Equity Forward also show that Lloyd received weekly “pregnancy notifications,” which included detailed and deeply personal information about these young women and requested information on the number of pregnant women in custody even before he was ORR Director.

Although Lloyd no longer runs ORR, he still works at HHS in the department’s Center for Faith and Opportunity Initiatives. More information on Scott Lloyd can be found at HHSWatch.org, an extensive website with a library of research on nearly 50 political appointees at our nation's health department.
