ORR Director Lloyd Compared Abortion to Holocaust: “Jews who died in the Holocaust had a chance to laugh, play, sing, dance, learn, and love each other. The victims of abortion do not.” Equity Forward calls for his immediate removal

Bombshell dropped in Mother Jones piece that also revealed Lloyd once helped woman he slept with obtain an abortion

08.22.18 — According to a Mother Jones piece published this morning, Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) Director Scott Lloyd’s anti-abortion crusade began when his sexual partner was faced with an unintended pregnancy and made the decision to have an abortion.  Lloyd revealed the details of his partner’s abortion in an essay that was part of a class assignment when he was a first year law student at Catholic University.

In addition to revealing that Lloyd helped his girlfriend obtain an abortion, the essay also provides a first hand look at Lloyd’s extreme and out of touch beliefs on topics ranging from the Holocaust to the role of women and their sexuality.  Specifically, he compares abortion to the Holocaust and states that “Jews who died in the Holocaust had a chance to laugh, play, sing, dance, learn, and love each other. The victims of abortion do not.”  He also states that women should only have sex if they’re prepared to be mothers:  Women “shouldn’t be so careless… as to have sex when they are not ready to be pregnant.”  According to the Mother Jones article, Lloyd’s essay did not address whether men should abstain from sex if they aren’t ready to be fathers.

Statement by Mary Alice Carter, Executive Director, Equity Forward,

“Scott Lloyd tried to dictate a woman’s decision to have an abortion once, and now he continues to try to make those personal, private decisions for any woman in ORR custody. Everyone is welcome to their own beliefs about abortion, but they cannot impose those on people in their personal lives and they certainly shouldn’t be able to do it from a perch in the federal government.”

“Lloyd’s comments that characterize the Holocaust as somehow preferable to abortion are appalling and shocking. Yesterday, this Administration did the right thing by deporting a Nazi and today we find that a similar mindset lives inside the Administration. Lloyd has no business serving in the government. He should have been fired prior to these revelations for his behavior violating civil rights, but keeping him in this position now is untenable.  We call on Secretary Alex Azar to fire Lloyd immediately.”

Equity Forward has been sounding the alarm for months on the dangers Scott Lloyd poses to women and children in his position as ORR Director, including for his role in the child separation crisis.
