"Pro-Family" Movement

The “Pro-Family” Movement is characterized by a rhetoric pledge to defend the “natural family” — coded language for heterosexual married couples and biological children. This anti-LGBTQ movement has been championed by many extremist organizations in both the domestic and international arenas, including the Alliance Defending Freedom, C-FAM, Focus on the Family, the Family Research Council and the World Congress of Families. Many of these organizations have worked with the Trump administration to host events at the U.N. at which administration officials have spoken. For example, in May 2019, Department of Health and Human Services official Valerie Huber spoke at a C-FAM-sponsored event at the U.N. called “It Takes A Family” in which she emphasized the Trump administration’s dedication to the natural family and expressed frustration with other U.N. member states for not falling in line.
