In Response to Missouri Abortion Ban Vote, Equity Forward Files Records Request

Highly restrictive law advances on the heels of ban in Alabama

05.17.19 – Just now, the Missouri House voted to advance a law effectively banning abortion in the state.

In response, Equity Forward filed a Sunshine Law request seeking communications from all of the bill’s sponsors in the legislature, as well as all materials used in consideration of the bill. Missouri’s Sunshine Law promises transparency among its government officials, and requires a response no later than three days after a request is received.

“The anti-abortion lobby is ramping up its coordinated effort to challenge women’s access to abortion, and Missouri is the latest target,” said Michelle Kuppersmith, Director of Equity Forward. “If Missouri legislators want to pass laws that control what should be a private decision between a woman and her doctor, we demand transparency around the creation of these laws.”

Kuppersmith continued, “Advocates are working hard on the ground to protect patients and maintain their ability to access care, and we support their efforts.”

Governor Parson has already signaled his intent to sign the legislation, which would make Missouri the eighth state to pass an abortion ban in 2019.
