Shot and Chaser: Shannon Royce admits Christian bias at HHS

Shot: Under HHS Secretary Azar’s leadership, the Center for Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships has maintained a very narrow view of faith, so much so that it has been challenged from the inside for its outreach, with one longtime staffer saying, “it’s supposed to be the faith-based partnership center, not the Christian-based partnership center.”

Chaser: According to AL.com earlier this week Shannon Royce, director of the Center for Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships at HHS, “presented herself [at a meeting] not as an official receptive to Christian involvement, but rather as a Christian actively working within government to promote church-based engagement in public issues.

Prior to her appointment at HHS, Royce was the chief of staff and Chief Operating Officer at the Family Research Council, an organization deemed a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center and whose leadership disagrees with the science behind contraception.
