U.S. Customs and Border Protection

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is housed within DHS. CBP is responsible for the border and is the entity that has separated children from their families and guardians. CBP has a devastating history of using violence and even deadly force in their apprehensions. The agency has also consistently flouted international human rights law when denying asylum seekers entry to the United States through its metering policy. The Biden administration renewed Title 42 in early August 2021, a public health order that allows border agents to quickly kick out migrants before they are able to seek asylum. Concurrently, expedited removal—deportation by CBP officials without a hearing in front of an immigration judge—is being used to deport families who cannot be removed under Title 42.
