Watchdog Group Expands Campaign Calling on Representatives Curbelo & Lance to Hold Administration Accountable for Family Separation Crisis with Full Page Print Ads

Equity Forward Action  Demands Congress Conduct Oversight of the Trump Administration

07.25.18 – Equity Forward Action today announced new print ads in Miami and New Jersey newspapers calling on Representative Carlos Curbelo (R-FL) and Representative Leonard Lance (R-NJ), respectively, to use their authority in Congress to hold the Trump Administration accountable for the child separation crisis. The full page ads are running in advance of tomorrow’s second court-ordered deadline to reunify families that were separated as part of the “zero tolerance” policy at the border. The administration failed to meet its first court-ordered deadline on July 10th, and reports indicate it will likely miss tomorrow’s as well.

The ads will run in English in the Miami Herald and TheStar-Ledger (New Jersey), and in Spanish in El Nuevo Herald.

“It’s devastating that thousands of children are still alone, scared, and unsure of when they will see their families again. This manufactured crisis is a humanitarian catastrophe, and members of Congress like Representatives Curbelo and Lance have failed to fully address it,” said Mary Alice Carter, Executive Director of Equity Forward Action. “Our message for Curbelo and Lance is simple: do your jobs, use your positions to get to the bottom of what happened and hold the Trump administration accountable for this cruel and inhumane policy.”

None of the powerful Congressional committees that Curbelo and Lance sit on have held a single hearing on issues related to child separation, despite having the authority to exercise broad oversight of government agencies involved in the crisis.

Equity Forward released polling of likely voters in Curbelo and Lance’s districts last month, and found significant support for Congressional oversight of the child separation crisis  from both Republicans and Trump supporters. Specifically:

  • Three-quarters of likely voters (78%) in Carlos Curbelo’s district (FL-26) say they are concerned about this policy, including 50% of self-described Conservative Republicans and 55% of voters with a favorable view of Trump, while;

  • Three-quarters of likely voters (74%) in Leonard Lance’s district (NJ-07)  support Congress acting to increase the accountability and transparency of ORR and HHS regarding these offices role in the separation of migrant children from their parents.
