Human Life International (HLI)

Human Life International (HLI) is an international anti-abortion group known for its extremist views and often inflammatory public comments. Headquartered in Front Royal, Virginia, HLI is united by its hatred toward LGBTQ people, abortion and birth control. HLI has claimed that “abortion is the ideal cover-up for incest” and has blamed “homosexuality” for child sexual abuse and birth control for “runaway venereal disease.”

HLI campaigns abroad have directly contributed to women being jailed for their reproductive health decisions and pregnancy outcomes. HLI “led” the implementation of El Salvador’s brutal abortion ban via a constitutional amendment in the 1990s and continues to pump funding into the country’s anti-abortion movement. HLI also funds and helps organize the Filipino anti-abortion movement, even going as far as directly endorsing anti-birth control candidates in the country, allegedly in violation of its nonprofit status. HLI is also tied to right-wing anti-abortion activists in Ireland, where it worked to fight the abortion rights referendum in 2018.
