Watchdog Group Slams Decision Allowing Title X “Gag Rule” to Go Into Effect
New York, NY – Yesterday, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit’s lack of action allowed the Trump administration to enforce its domestic “gag rule,” which forces providers to decide whether to accept federal family planning funds or stop offering the full range of health care options.
The rule in question prohibits Title X-funded health care providers from referring patients for abortion and requires health clinics to physically and financially separate abortion services from Title X-funded family planning services.
“The Ninth Circuit’s decision yesterday is a huge blow to the millions of people who rely on Title X-funded clinics for comprehensive reproductive health services,” said Michelle Kuppersmith, director of Equity Forward. “This unethical rule is just the latest push in the Trump administration’s campaign to destroy the nation’s birth control program and prevent providers from giving patients the information they need to make important health decisions. We have to hold the administration accountable for the harm its rule will cause the American public.”
